Radicchio
About: Radicchio, part of the chicory family, has a bitter and spicy taste which mellows when grilled or roasted. Pliny the Elder recommended radicchio as a blood purifier and an aid for insomniacs. He was definitely onto something, for Radicchio does contain intybin, a substance that has sedative and analgesic effects. Radicchio is very popular in Italy where it is usually eaten grilled in olive oil or mixed into dishes such as risotto. In the US, it is most often consumed raw in salads.
