As he wisely points out: "There are many products used for disease and pest control in organic farming that if over-used are no different than those maligned in conventional farming.  The key is to find the right balance.  This is the art of responsible fruit farming."

Migliorelli FarmKen Migliorelli

Migliorelli Farm is a family-run fruit and vegetable farm located in Northern Dutchess County in the Hudson Valley Region of New York. The farm originated in the Bronx in 1933 when Angelo Migliorelli first brought over broccoli rabe seeds from the Lazio region of Italy. Migliorelli and his son, Rocco, peddled their vegetables by horse and cart up and down the Bronx, sun up to sun down. Eventually Co-Op City was built, pushing farmers out of the Bronx and influencing Rocco's decision to move to the Hudson Valley. Now in its 3rd generation, Migliorelli Farm grows over 130 different varieties of fruits and vegetables, including the same strain of broccoli rabe brought over from Italy.

In 1998, Ken Migliorelli sold all developing rights of his farm to be protected through a Scenic Hudson conservation easement to remain farmland forever.

Migliorelli Farm's farming practices are modeled after the European Good Agriculture Practice (EUREP GAP) system. They implement a comprehensive Integrated Pest Management system that drastically reduces the Health Risks and Exposure of Pesticides. Migliorelli Farm integrates new proven scientific tools to reduce the health risks and exposure of pesticides by utilizing Decision Support Systems in all facets of production from crop rotation, planting, pest control & workers' safety protection.

The local Migliorelli Farm Stands are open daily 9-6 at Rt. 199 and River Road, Rhinebeck (the bridge approach) and Rt. 9 in Red Hook across from Rhinebeck Savings Bank. Migliorelli operates more than 30 markets in the Hudson Valley and NYC.

Norwich Meadows FarmNorwichMeadows

Norwich Farm started in 1998 on a half-acre parcel behind the founders’ house.  During the first two years of operation, business was only done in upstate New York.  In 2000, the current partners in Norwich Meadows Farm, LLC, decided to expand the farm with the vision of creating a community supported by the farm and other small businesses.

Today, that vision is becoming a reality.  The farm acreage has expanded significantly to an area of over 80 acres and 20 acres in pasture that includes a rented farm in New Jersey.  They have a presence in a number of markets including green markets in New York City and a growing list of community supported groups (CSAs) in New York City and Norwich.

Norwich Meadows Farms has instituted a program of growing crops in “High Tunnels” in order to gain more control over adverse weather conditions and to increase yields.  To date they have constructed more than 50 tunnels and have formed a construction and sales division to design and install tunnels on other farms.
